Here's Troy's story.

I'd seen the billboards advertising CoolSculpting and I was skeptical. In a country consumed with weight loss and get-thin-quick gimmicks, it's sometimes hard to tell what's legit and what isn't. But I wanted to be impartial, so I went into Dr. Gordon Sasaki's office with an open mind.

What I learned surprised me. I expected a hardcore sales pitch from Dr. Sasaki and the CoolSculpting reps. Instead I got a no-nonsense discussion about science and the physiology behind weight loss and fat loss. CoolSculpting isn't a process they recommend for everyone. And it's not so much about overall weight loss as it is focused on fat loss — getting rid of that stubborn fat that even fit, healthy people have lingering around their midsection. This was certainly refreshing. Where were the miracle claims? Where were the obviously altered before and after photos that strained credulity?

Troy is a guy many men can relate to. Athletic, married with kids, his weight has fluctuated over the years. Overall he stays pretty healthy, but he's got some love handles that he just can't seem to break up with. According to Dr. Sasaki, that's a common problem. Once weight is gained and then lost in an area, those fat cells are still there, albeit smaller than before. Traditionally, the surgical method to get rid of that fat meant liposuction, an invasive technique with plenty of risk and plenty of pain. CoolSculpting was a perfect alternative for Troy. He spends an hour in the chair, dealing with a cold application that's numbing but not painful, and that's it. Over the next few weeks his body works to eliminate the newly destroyed fat cells.

Seeing the process firsthand was helpful. I learned that CoolSculpting isn't a miracle cure designed to eradicate the negative effects of a lifetime of bad habits,. Rather, it's a bit like teeth whitening to get rid of stubborn stains. It helps patients get over that last hurdle. Looking better, feeling better, and without having to go under the knife. Turns out CoolSculpting might be kinda cool after all. Link to Original Article >

Now that the weather is a wee bit warmer, many of us are thinking about getting outdoors to enjoy the spring air and sunshine.

May offers a welcome chance to get out there and be active, whether it's by taking a walk with friends (good for the body and the soul!), enjoying a bike ride or -- depending on the temperatures where you live -- taking a refreshing dip in the nearest body of water.
All of those activities require fuel, which can come from eating healthy foods -- particularly the fruits and vegetables that are at their peak this time of year.

So what are our picks for May superfoods? Take a look at our list. Then, as always, let us know if there are any in-season favorites you can't believe we overlooked.

Face-mapping is an ancient Eastern philosophy which, similar to acupuncture, is rooted in the belief that all parts of the body are intrinsically connected.
In this Eastern Chinese philosophy, issues showing up on your face can be indicative of issues much deeper in the body.
This supports what I’ve always said- you can’t just count calories or grams of carbs and protein. Our bodies are more complex than a collection of numbers. That processed diet food or high amounts of animal protein may help keep you lean (at least for a little while), but over time can age your organs at an accelerated rate. What good is it to be thin if your face looks haggard and aged?
Eat more fibrous, enzyme-rich fresh plant foods and watch an improvement in your skin. The foods which are good for your health will also elevate your beauty. Orignial Article >

Whether it's flaps under your arms, or a hanging pouch around your stomach, loose skin can be an embarrassing issue. In this article you'll learn why skin gets loose, how to tighten it after fat loss and which medical procedures, nutrition tactics and exercises will actually help keep your skin tight.

Why Skin Gets Loose
Skin is an elastic living tissue that stretches as we move and grow (or shrink). It's not one big piece of rubber that covers your body, but an actual organ. And just like all the other organs in your body, it is made of cells.

The cells on the outer part of your skin are constantly being lost and replaced with new cells, but the skin cells under that outer layer are more permanent. These lower layers of the skin are made up of connective tissues, fibers, blood vessels and all sorts of components that can stretch or contract -- depending on how you treat them.
When you lose weight (and especially when you lose weight quickly) the elastic parts of your skin don't have time to adapt to your new shape. If you are older, have poor nutrition, aren't hydrated, have excessive sun exposure or smoke, this problem is aggravated even more, since all of these things contribute to decreased elasticity.

How to Tighten Loose Skin
As you lose weight and loose skin begins to appear, don't panic! Your skin will slowly return to a shape that fits your new body. But that process can take up to two years, so here are steps you can take to make your skin tighten faster:

#1: Don't Lose Weight Too Quickly
Crash diets and excessive amounts of time spent exercising can rapidly shed both muscle and fat, and result in a greater amount of loose skin. Aim for no more than 1-2 pounds of fat loss per week, and include weight training so you build muscle to help stretch the skin.

#2: Hydrate
Water is a crucial component of maintaining skin elasticity. From both food and drink, you should be taking in at least two liters of water each day.

#3: Eat
Two ingredients that keep skin plump and elastic are collagen and elastin, and the protein to help form these is found in cottage cheese, milk, legumes, tofu, beans, seeds, nuts and fish. The oils in these foods will also help with skin elasticity.

#4: Care for Your Skin
Avoid harsh detergents like sulfates in soaps, shampoos and dishwashing liquids. Limit sun exposure, stay away from tanning booths, and limit exposure to hot and chlorinated water, since all of these elements decrease elasticity.

Do You Need Surgery?
Skin can only be stretched so far before it loses some of its innate ability to snap back. If you've had a 9-month pregnancy, then you can tighten your loose skin. In contrast, if you've carried 50-100 extra pounds on your body for a long time, you might need to resort to plastic surgery and stapling to tighten loose skin.

As mentioned earlier, elasticity of your skin will naturally decrease with age. Although you have control over the rate of your weight loss, staying properly hydrated, eating the right foods and caring for your skin, you simply have no control over your age! So rather than letting age stress you out, you should focus on the things over which you do have control -- like exercising and eating right -- and you'll find that you always look better than your peers. And feel great!

Prevention's January cover story features Kristin Chenoweth, on newsstands this week. This cover is particularly timely as Kristin will be hosting and performing at the American Country Music Awards on Monday, December 5, on FOX.

On if she's had plastic surgery and why she's happy to talk about it:

No, no work. But I get Botox regularly, and I'm very happy to talk about why. When I was thirty-five, I was having debilitating migraines about once a week. I went to my doctor in New York, and she said she wanted to give me five shots of Botox across my eyebrows. And I said, 'Oh, no. I make my living through my facial expressions.' And she said, 'You're not going to have a living if you can't work.' So I let her do it, and I haven't had a full-blown headache since. Every six months, five shots right here [motions across her eyebrows]. I'm thankful for it.

On not being on Glee this season:

I'm sad, because I love April Rhodes and so does the audience. It just goes to show that people love a good drunk, I guess! Whole Article >

In 2010, more than 2.4 million individuals in the U.S. received Botox injections.
But while Botox is commonly used to treat crow's feet, laugh lines and other wrinkles, it may also have other non-cosmetic benefits.

In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Botox to treat migraine headaches. According to WebMD, the FDA suggests Botox when used to treat chronic migraines be given at intervals of about 12 weeks as multiple injections around the head and neck to try to dull future headache symptoms.

The drug, which is a form of botulinium toxin type A, is also used to treat more than 20 other conditions, including muscle spasms and excessive sweating. Scientists are currently testing Botox's efficacy in treating conditions such as asthma.
Experts say Botox often provides positive cosmetic results with few side effects. However, its effects are not permanent and injections need to be repeated every three to six months for the best results.

There are ways that individuals can ensure the best outcome when using Botox for cosmetic reasons, according to WebMD. The health website recommends those planning on getting Botox injections avoid bruising by abstaining from taking aspirin or ibuprofen, which can thin the blood, for two weeks prior to treatment. Most importantly, those who want the best possible outcome are advised to seek out a physician that is board-certified in dermatology or plastic surgery.

While there are several options available when it comes to injectable treatments, experts recommend speaking with your physician to discuss your areas of concern, and to hear the options they suggest before making a decision.

How do you make that last bit of belly fat or the most stubborn love handles disappear, when dieting and exercise just aren’t doing it? There’s always surgery. But wouldn’t you like a less radical solution? Well, now there is one. And it really works. You can actually lose those unwanted bulges without knives, needles, suction hoses or even lasers. It’s a very gentle, very effective procedure. And very cool...Literally. It’s called Coolsculpting. And The Greenwich Medical Skincare & Laser Spa is where you’ll find it in Connecticut.

Developed by Harvard scientists, this unique, patented, FDA cleared and clinically proven procedure from ZELTIQ involves freezing fat cells without damage to your skin. Because Coolsculpting is totally non-invasive, most people can go right back to their normal routine with no down time whatsoever. The targeted fat cells are then eliminated naturally by your body over a couple of months. The belly bulges, love handles and other stubborn fat deposits on the bac2 simply melt away.
1. The right SPF - Nothing less then an SPF 30 (anything higher than SPF 50 is only protecting you a teensy, weensy bit more, so why clog your pores?)
2. Always use a Broad Spectrum sunscreen to help protect from both UVA and UVB rays. Remember A is for Aging and B is for Burning.
3. How Often: Reapply every 2 Hours when in direct sunlight.
4. How Much: Use the equivalent of a “shot” glass in product to make sure you’re using enough! Studies show most of us aren’t!
5. Check the Expiration Date! Anything older than a year—through it out!
6. “Physcial” vs. “Chemical” Sunscrees: It’s boils down to a matter of choice, however, the physical sunscreen is better for breakout and sensitive skin and for those of us “going green”. Tip: Skinceuticals has a phenomenal new physical sunscreen – Physical Fusion SPF 50 - it has a slight tint to it to enhance your natural skin tone and it’s paraben free!. And NeoCutis has an SPF 30 called Journee Bio-restorative Day Cream, which has PSP in it. Both feel like silk on the skin. (not greasy feeling at all) and are very light reflective.

Ellen’s Tip: I’m sure many of my clients have heard me say this, but the best protection I ever got was when I was in the Caribbean a few years ago, I used an SPF 30 (sorry, forgot which one), and put my Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup over it. After the trip, my friend’s felt sorry for me since they assumed it must have been cloudy and rainy the entire trip!

I've had acne for 3 years now and I'm determined to get rid of it. I wanted to ask if you could give me some advice of how I could get rid of my acne? I've tried a lot of creams, but none of them work. I would appreciate advice on how to treat my acne and what products to try using.

A. I know how devastating acne can be since I suffered with it for years myself, and nothing would please me more then to help you eradicate your acne too! However, with the information you gave me it is very hard to determine the cause, or the root-- so to speak-- of the problem. How old were you three years ago when it started? Did you start any new medications at the time, especially those that would affect you hormonally? Do you have any other health problems going on right now? Have you been under an unusual amount of stress the past three years? The "creams" that you have tried so far, are they over the counter or prescriptions from your doctor? Do you have allergies? Food allergies? Have you ever had a professional skin peel to try to fix the problem? These are just SOME of the questions we would ask you in a consultation and we would also go over everything you are currently using now including your shampoo, conditioner, and even nail polish! Acne can be very tricky so what works for one person does not necessarily work for another. This is why it is essential to see the acne patient in person through one of our complimentary consultations, (you can plan on this taking about one hour from start to finish). Afterwards, a home protocol and any necessary professional treatments will be recommended and tailored to your unique and specific skin care needs to eradicate, or at least control, your acne once and for all.
Wishing you the best in beautiful skin, and I hope to see you soon at the Medical Spa,
