What is the best treatment for Melasma in Hispanic women?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Saturday, June 05, 2010

Many of our Hispanic patients are seeing tremendous success with a treatment called Cosmelan.  This treatment is perfect for darker skins and involves the application of a medicated facial masque applied to the face and left on for several hours.  Once the masque is taken off, a very specific home protocol is followed for five months, however, results are seen within the first two weeks.  Of course, daily use of sunscreen of an SPF of 30 or higher is also part of the home care.

How long do Juvederm injections last?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Monday, May 10, 2010
Juvaderm has FDA clearance to last  up to 12 months.  On average we find Juvaderm Ultra to last up to 6months, and Juvaderm Ultra Plus to last a bit longer.  It all depends on your metabolism and how fast or slow your body breaks down the product.

How many treatments are there before Laser Hair Removal is completed?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Monday, May 10, 2010
Laser Hair Removal is proven to be effective against hair that has pigment.  Thus, the darker and thicker the hair the better the result and quicker.  Hair is destroyed by the laser by the attraction to the pigment with the hair follicle and internal shaft.

Treatments are variable based on the skin and hair color.  The energy may be programmed differently to achieve the best overall safe results.  Overall, six treatments  is average.

Why is it that IPL treatments have to be 3-6 weeks apart?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Friday, April 23, 2010
The minimum amount of time between IPL treatments is usually 3 weeks.  This allows "damaged pigmented" lesions to absorb completely.  Initially the sunspots turn darker because of the heat generated from the laser.  The body sees this damaged, darkened pigment as debris and needs to be removed.  This removal process can fully take up to 3 weeks.

Would Laser Hair Removal help with ingrown hairs?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Friday, April 23, 2010
Yes, the best overall treatment for ingrown hairs is laser hair removal.  The laser targets the color of the hair follicle and internal shaft and heats it up to a hot enough temperature to destroy the cells feeding the follicle.  This will make the hair weaker and finer with each treatment until it removed permanently.

Is the Microdermabrasion procedure the best for stretch marks?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Friday, April 23, 2010
Stretch marks are best treated with a non-invasive fractional laser called Fraxel.  The laser ablates or resurfaces the scar tissue and new collagen grows in it's place.  The final results take approximately 6 months to achieve a tighter and smoother appearance; although patients have noted earlier improvement as early as two months.

Overall, 5 treatments is recommended.  Maybe more for different skin types.

How do I know which chemical peel is right for me?

The Greenwich Medical Staff - Monday, March 01, 2010
Your skin care professional will go over your profile on the first visit, analyze your skin and explain the different peels, how they work and which one would be the best for you.  For these reasons, it is important to get your chemical peel in a medical spa with a licensed medical esthetician.
