Tips for Transitioning Your Skincare from Summer to Fall

Pumpkin is everywhere, which can only mean one thing – the fall season has arrived. As you start packing away your summer wardrobe (sadly) and looking forward to autumn’s bright foliage, don’t forget to make some changes to your skincare routine too. Less sunlight, drier air, and colder weather, especially the changing temperatures from indoors to outdoors, mean your skin has different needs now. And if you had fun in the sun all summer, you’ll also need to help your skin recover – fall is just the right time to do that!

Aesthetician JoAnn Pucci shares her top tips for keeping your skin healthy and glowing this fall.

Should you change your skincare seasonally?

Differing temperatures and levels of humidity during various times of the year cause skin to behave differently. You’ve probably noticed your skin is drier in the fall and winter, while hotter months may leave it more prone to breakouts. Because of this, you do need to make changes to your skincare routine as the seasons shift.

How should you update your skincare for fall?

Skin sustains damage from the sun during the summer months, so it’s important to transition into a fall skincare routine that will restore your skin. The first step is to reverse some of that summer damage.

The CoolPeel laser is an excellent treatment to refresh skin. It is a fractionated laser, also called a CO2 laser, that helps correct pigment, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars, while tightening the skin. It’s an all-around skin resurfacing treatment that is perfect for this time of year. We typically recommend laser treatments in a series spaced about a month apart, and fall is the ideal time to start.

Even better, the downtime from a CoolPeel laser treatment is mild because it delivers short pulses of energy to resurface skin where it’s needed without heating the skin nearby. Despite its less disruptive nature, CoolPeel will still take years off your skin. I really like doing my face, neck, and chest during fall to keep the balance of pigment even.

How does your skin change in the fall?

During fall, the main skin concern is the need for more hydration. To properly hydrate your skin, you’ll need a surface that is amenable to letting that hydration sink in. But during fall, you are also combatting dryness, and with a layer of dry skin on top, even the best hydrating products won’t be able to penetrate. Dry skin cells form a barrier, so you want to get rid of them.

Our Diamond Glow Facial does just that. This results-driven hydradermabrasion treatment helps eliminate dead skin cells by exfoliating and extracting. It simultaneously smooths, softens, and hydrates the skin. It’s a perfect fit for fall and will literally have your skin glowing!

What products should I add to my fall skincare routine?

Because we need more hydration in the cooler months, I recommend using a heavier moisturizer than you did during summer. Our Arieed MD Redew Intensive Hyaluronic Moisturizer or SkinMedica’s Dermal Repair Cream are two great options.

Hydrating your skin will help it transition to fall weather and get it ready for the winter months when you will want to start using your Retin A or retinol complex.
