How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting’s Successful Results

Known for eliminating unwanted fat on stubborn areas of the body, CoolSculpting has been safely and effectively performed around the world more than 8 million times. This non-invasive treatment works by freezing fat cells to the point of rupture without affecting the surrounding tissues or the surface of the skin. Treatments are quick, and with recent updates to the applicators, results appear sooner, and fat reduction is greater.

Yet despite this treatment’s wide-ranging use and acceptance, the actual science behind it may seem like a big mystery. Let’s take a deep dive into how CoolSculpting was developed, how CoolSculpting works, and what type of results patients can expect today.

 The Scientific Roots of CoolSculpting

The innovators who developed the CoolSculpting fat-reduction treatment used a concept borrowed from some researchers who published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine all the way back in 1970. The researchers had noticed that babies who sucked on popsicles developed dimples, which led them to believe the cold temperature of the popsicles encouraged fat loss. They were right, and that process of freezing fat cells is called cryolipolysis.

Nearly three decades later, scientists at Harvard University developed a technology that harnessed that same power of low temperature to target and destroy specific areas of fat cells. Utilizing cryolipolysis, this groundbreaking technology became the treatment we know as CoolSculpting. After it was FDA-cleared in 2009, it quickly became the go-to treatment for noninvasive fat reduction.

What Happens to Fat Cells After a CoolSculpting Treatment?

Cryolipolysis is the process of using cold to break down fat, but what actually happens when that occurs? Freezing a fat cell causes its membrane to rupture, leaving it unstable and unable to do its job – basically, the fat cell is destroyed. This is what happens during a CoolSculpting treatment, and all the frozen, nonfunctional fat cells are then naturally eliminated by your body during the following weeks.

The best news is that because fat cells do not replicate, and you cannot grow new fat cells, once they are gone, they are gone for good. That means CoolSculpting offers permanent results.

What Areas Can Be Treated with CoolSculpting?

In its early days, CoolSculpting was FDA-cleared for use on the flanks and abdomen, so it was offered for reducing fat on the love handles, abs, and belly. As CoolSculpting technology continued to be developed, medical aesthetic professionals (and the FDA!) realized its fat-freezing power could be harnessed to treat nearly any area of the body. Today, we also use CoolSculpting to address unwanted fat on inner and outer thighs, upper arms, the back/bra line, and the banana roll below the butt. It can also be used to treat the jawline and a double chin.

When CoolSculpting Elite was released just two years ago, the new applicators and machine improvements, let us provide faster, better results to 100% of patients. After just one CoolSculpting Elite treatment, patients achieve up to 25% fat reduction on the treated area. Additional treatments can be performed if more fat reduction is desired.

 CoolSculpting Reviews in Scientific Literature

We’ve seen exceptional results from our patients who choose CoolSculpting for fat reduction. But scientists have continued to keep an eye on this technology too, and numerous clinical studies have reported the safety and efficacy of this treatment.

According to the scientific review “Safety, Tolerance, and Patient Satisfaction with Non-invasive Cryolipolysis” published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, the cryolipolysis procedure was well tolerated.” Furthermore, “89% of respondents reporting a positive perception of treatment duration and 96% reporting minimal to tolerable discomfort…82% of patients would recommend the cryolipolysis procedure to a friend. Caliper measurements demonstrated 23% reduction in fat layer…with 86% of subjects showing improvement per investigator assessment.”¹
