The accolades come just after its inaugural campaign for International Women’s Day, #CourageisConfidence, urging women to crush stereotypes, show courage and inspire others. As part of the spa’s commitment to confidence and championing women, the campaign celebrated the fascinating stories of strong women who inspire confidence and embody empowerment.

“The entire team at Greenwich Medical Spa is thrilled to receive the 2020 Best of Greenwich Award, and we are grateful to our customers that make the Greenwich community a better place,” said Marria Pooya, Greenwich Medical Spa CEO and Visionary.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2020 Greenwich Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Greenwich Award Program and data provided by third parties.

    Motivated by Confidence
Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, Greenwich Medical Spa managing partner Marria Pooya moved to New York as a child and was the first in her community and family to attend college. She earned a dual degree in Finance and International Business from NYU’s Stern School of Business. Since launching Greenwich Medical Spa, Marria and her staff have donated more than $100,000 to charitable organizations with an emphasis on empowering women, youth, and vulnerable populations.

“With a larger share of voice on confidence, we believe upcoming generations will redefine self-expression and what it means to feel beautiful,” says Pooya. “Championing confidence is what we stand for at Greenwich Medical Spa, and as we expand into Ridgefield, Conn., we have even more responsibility to move this conversation forward.”

Marria Pooya is involved with the Blossom Hill Foundation, which supports organizations that engage and empower war-affected youth as leaders in the reconstructions of their lives and their communities, as well as Afghan Hands, a nonprofit that supports disadvantaged and disenfranchised women in Afghanistan. Marria’s business acumen and competitive edge developed during her time as a High Yield Analyst on Wall Street covering beauty and consumer products companies. Dr Ross was quoted in the New Beauty's January 2020 article!

by Tatiana Bido. Why Chin Filler Is the Hottest Face Sculpting Treatment Right Now. If you feel like everyone and their mom is getting a smidge of filler in their chins, you’re not wrong. You can count me as everyone and I’m someone’s mom, so I fit in both categories.

When I first tried it three years ago, I thought, “why not?” I never thought I had a weak chin, but once the filler was placed, I was instantly hooked. It gave my lower face a nice endpoint, and although the difference is mere millimeters, I could really see it. Now, chin filler is trending and the lower face is getting as much attention as the cheeks. To get to the bottom of this phenomenon, we asked the pros why chins are so hot and who should jump on the strong profile bandwagon.

    Why Chins, Why Now?
According to West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth R. Beer, MD, the chin was once a commonly missed area. “We wrote a big article and poster presentation about injecting the chins. I’ve been doing it for years and years and years, and it was just published and discussed in one of the big dermatology meetings so now everyone is seeing how beneficial it is,” says Dr. Beer. “A little bit of botulinum toxin and a little bit of filler in the chin will help give better definition in the lower third of the face and help create the ideal heart-shaped face.”

    Which Filler Works Best?
“I prefer to use a thicker hyaluronic acid filler with a high G prime number like Juvéderm Voluma or Restylane Lyft,” says Birmingham, AL dermatologist Corey Hartman, MD. “These fillers provide maximum lift and the longest duration. They are also best used when placed deep on the bone to mimic the structural support of the bone and to provide the best projection and elongation. Sculptra is also a wise choice if the patient is okay with gradual improvement over time.”

Beverly Hills, CA plastic surgeon Andrew Ordon, MD says he uses longer-lasting options. “To add projection and volume to the chin, I inject either fat or Radiesse, a filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite which is found in bone and joints.”

    The Best Candidates

So, who should try it? “Individuals who have facial asymmetry either caused by a recessive chin or aging process,” says Greenwich, CT dermatologist Mitchell Ross, MD. “Aging leads to collagen, bone and muscle loss. But I would avoid against it if the patient already has an implant, depending on material that was used.”

If you’ve been thinking about trying it, these doctors agree that now is the time. As Dr. Hartman says, “If 2019 was the year of the jawline, then 2020 is definitely the year of the chin!”

    Marria on Women In Business!

Our very own, Marria Pooya, is featured on Women In Business!

Another speaker was Marria Pooya, managing partner of Greenwich Medical Spa. Started in 2005, the medical spa now includes locations in Westport and Greenwich, Connecticut, and Scarsdale, New York. There are 23 staff members providing treatments including CoolSculpting, Botox and fillers. “I wanted a business that helped empower women,” Pooya said. “I wanted to be the best med spa in the area by giving the best quality of care, the best customer service and to be completely honest and transparent with patients.” In addition to the medical spa locations, Greenwich Medical Spa has developed a line of skincare products, ArieedMD.

Pooya said there are three things anyone concerned with antiaging should be using. “Sunscreen is the number one antiaging product that’s out there. You should not leave home even in the winter without sunscreen. Number two is vitamin C.” She said that vitamin C helps the body deal with free radicals created by sun exposure, pollution and even stress. “Finally, a retinoid or Retin-A (a form of vitamin A), because that helps with fine lines and wrinkles. It helps build collagen as well as thicken your skin and shrink your pores.”

Dr Ross was quoted in the New Beauty's article!

by Danielle Fontana. Recommendations from friends and co-workers are great, but there's nothing like a jaw-dropping before-and-after photo to get us to instantly add to cart. The latest take-my-money product just so happens to be all natural, and less than $20. Enter: Sky Organics Organic Castor Oil ($15), a product that, as BuzzFeed noted, singlehandedly transformed this woman's hair, as seen in her photo.

"I had an allergy in my scalp 10 months ago that made the back of my head bald," the user stated in a review of the 100-percent pure and organic oil. "I tried this product because of the good reviews and ingredients because my scalp was really sensitive. And I didn’t expect the outcome of this product. Check the photos below," she shared proudly. Aside from the obvious benefits of hair growth and scalp soothing, she noted her "hair became softer than before and thicker."

So what's the catch? Before we start buying in bulk to boost our own strands, Greenwich, CT dermatologist Mitchell Ross, MD stresses there's no scientific study backing the fact that castor oil promotes hair growth or regrowth. Chicago dermatologist Jordan C. Carqueville, MD agrees, and contends that while the oil isn't scientifically proven to stimulate hair to grow faster, "applying the oil would hydrate the scalp, decreasing inflammation due to dryness." Plus, she notes the oil may also strengthen the hair follicle, making it less susceptible to breakage.

The bottom line: While a bottle of this castor oil isn't guaranteed to make your hair grow faster, it definitely may—as seen here—and it will help foster a more nourished, hydrated environment for strands to grow. A healthy scalp is the basis for healthy hair, after all.

    Ultherapy’s Fab Five Award 2018

Ultherapy Greenwich We are so proud and excited to be awarded with “Ultherapy’s Fab Five” Award for 2018. Only five practices in the entire nation have been recognized with this achievement. We, at the Greenwich Medical Spa, are honored to be recognized for our experience and the amount of skin-tightening treatments we have performed to date.

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive procedure FDA-cleared to lift and tighten skin using focused ultrasound energy, which is delivered to the same foundational layer typically addressed by surgeons during cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. This energy initiates the body's natural response to stimulate the growth of fresh, new collagen and strengthen weak collagen. Some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, but the real results appear over 3-6 months as new collagen builds, gradually lifting and tightening skin on the face and neck, and soothing skin on the chest.

As Connecticut’s & New York’s #1 Ultherapy Provider, our experience matters. We customize each treatment to fit your needs, giving you the non-surgical lifting and tightening you’re looking for with no downtime. Call us today at 203.637.0662 to schedule your complimentary consultation.

Top Dermatologists Call These 5 Moisturizers the Best Picks for Summer

    by Danielle Fontana
With temperatures on the constant rise, rich and heavy moisturizers are taking a back seat for lighter, more hydrating options that won't clog pores. Here, top dermatologists' go-to picks for summer moisturizers.

IS Clinical Youth Intensive Crème ($205) "This product truly lives up to its name, says Greenwich, CT dermatologist Mitchell J. Ross, MD. "My patients love it because they can see and feel an immediate difference, and they love the rich consistency. Within weeks, you'll notice a difference in your skin's firmness, tone and texture, and it also protects the skin with potent antioxidants that fight against free-radical assault and helps with tissue repair."

Top Dermatologists Reveal Their Favorite Skin Care Products for Fast Results

by Brittany Fallon Finding the right skin care routine that actually works can be daunting. We all want amazing results, and we want to see them ASAP. However, topical products typically require several weeks of consistent use to prove their worth. But, that's not to say there aren't super potent formulas that make a noticeable difference in your skin's appearance much quicker than their counterparts. Here are seven picks from top dermatologists.

"On its own, the Retinol Complex—it comes in three different strengths and is time-released for better absorption and less irritation—will change skin's texture and tone, as well as diminish the appearance of fine lines and coarse wrinkles, and help minimize large pores. However, if I want my patient to see dramatic, rapid changes in their skin, I'll recommend what I call the 'dynamic duo,' which pairs the retinol with SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum ($320), which is the highest concentration of growth factors available to treat lines and texture. The result is rapid-fire skin care correction."

Retinol Peels Are the Super Potent Anti-Aging Treatment That's Trending Now

by Brittany Fallon Treating your skin to a professional-strength peel can be like hitting the reset button on your complexion. You shed all the dead skin cells that build up on the surface of your skin over time and make it look dull, and start fresh with new, younger-looking skin underneath. Most peels you're familiar with use acids or fruit enzymes to loosen this dead skin layer, but there's another option that uses retinol, and although it's not new, it's recently become a much more popular request at dermatologist's offices and spas.

"Retinol peels use vitamin A as the exfoliating agent, although they are sometimes combined with other peeling agents depending on the client's skin type and individual needs," says Chicago dermatologist Carolyn Jacob, MD. Vitamin A gives skin the smooth, rejuvenated results you'd expect from other peels, but with even more anti-aging benefits.

According to Greenwich, CT, dermatologist Mitchell Ross, MD, retinol peels are highly effective because pure retinol is able to penetrate into deeper layers of skin due to its small molecular size. "They're suitable for most skin types, but are particularly effective for those with acne, pigment issues and visible signs of aging. As people become more educated and understand the abundance of benefits retinol offers, these peels are becoming more popular. In the past, people only associated retinoids with acne, but today most women are adding a retinoid, whether over-the-counter or prescription, to their skin care routines. So, it just makes sense that they would want it in the form of a professional peel, too."

Dr. Ross says you will notice both short-term and long-term benefits from a retinol peel due to how retinol works in the skin. "Your skin will feel more hydrated, fine lines and wrinkles will be reduced, your skin's elasticity will be boosted for a plumper look, and the breakdown of natural collagen in your skin will slow down," he explains. "For acne-prone skin, breakouts will be calmed and flare-ups will be reduced. Overall, retinol peels help maintain the general appearance and health of the skin."

As with most in-office peels that tend to be much stronger than the versions you use at home, there will be some downtime. "Depending on the strength of the peel [6 percent retinol peels are commonly offered], there is typically mild flaking for two to three days after the treatment," says Dr. Jacob. And as Dr. Ross recommends, "It's always wise not to plan on attending a big social or work event for about a week after getting a peel."

The Drugstore Supplement That Transformed This Woman's Thinning Hair

Stress can take a nasty toll on everything from our skin to our weight—it can even make our hair thin out, which is exactly what happened to this Australian-based beauty blogger.

According to DailyMail, Kimberly Nissen, 31, wrote in a blog post that she was experiencing "blogger's burnout" (spending "so much emotional and physical time" on her job), which caused her stress and led her to develop poor eating habits.

"When I had my mental breakdown, I stopped eating appropriately," she wrote. "Actually, I stopped eating altogether for long periods of time. The result was my anemia coming back and I ignored it."

As a result, Nissen began losing her hair, but she thought it was probably just due to her styling habits. "I blamed my tight braids, hair irons and chemical damage. However, when my normal amount of hair fall dramatically increased, with noticeable receding of my hairline, I panicked. I didn’t know where to begin with treating it but I couldn’t understand why it was happening."

After limiting the stress she put on her hair—she stopped wearing tight hairstyles, avoided using heat-based tools and hadn't dyed it in almost two years—Nissen learned that most causes of hair loss are health-related, not from daily habits, so she visited a doctor.

"There are dozens of reasons female hair loss occurs, but the three most common health related causes are pregnancy, thyroid disorders and anemia," she wrote. "Ruling out pregnancy was instant, and I had already been investigating a thyroid issue recently, and that was ruled out, so my doctor and I looked into anemia. My GP suggested that before we go down the expensive path of seeing any number of specialists and dermatologists, we should try simply adding an iron supplement to my diet. I was prepared to try all the prescription hair tonics, lasers and any other treatment that was recommended, but ideally, a $15 bottle of vitamins would be a dream solution for me."

Nissen took one Iron Plus supplement (many brands sell them; you can find them at almost all health food stores and drugstores) each day for a month, and in just that short time, she said her hair line had filled out to where it was three years before. "I have very thin hair, so my hair has never provided full coverage of my scalp, but as you will see from the before-and-after photos, the results are noticeable."

Greenwich, CT, dermatologist Mitchell Ross, MD, says iron deficiency is one of the many causes of hair loss and alopecia in women. "When iron stores are low, the body lacks the ability to produce hemoglobin in the blood, which carries oxygen for the growth and repair of all body cells, including the hair follicles. Iron deficiency hair loss is a temporary hair loss that causes the hair to be prematurely pushed from the anagen (growing) phase into the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle, causing the hairs to fall out. If the cause of hair loss is due to low blood iron levels, then iron supplements could be recommended to correct the deficiency and help return the follicles to the anagen (growth) phase."

However, Dr. Ross notes that iron supplements will not help those who do not have low iron, and therefore they should not be taken unless a health care provider deems you iron-deficient, which can be determined by a blood test.

Greenwich Medical Spa Featured in Serendipity Magazine

If you weren't able to check out the latest edition of Serendipity Magazine, here's a look at the article we did. We are so grateful to Serendipity for letting us talk beauty with them!

    Quick Fix with Lasting Results

The easy-to-access Greenwich Medical Spa's most popular, tried-and-true procedures are injectables like Botoxand dermal fillers like Juvederm, which seem more appealing in a brightly colored, cozy setting than in a sterile doctor's office. Greenwich MedSpa is one of Fairfield County's leading Botox providers, and Managing Partner Marria Pooya points out that she's seeing more clients in their 20s opting for preventative Botox.

Yet, over 3,000 procedures later, the Coolsculpting treatment has officially become the hottest trend here. The patented and clinically proven Coolsculpting body-contouring service actually freezes targeted fat cells (on troublesome territories like bulging bellies and love handles) over the course of a few months. "In one treatment you can lose up to 25 percent of the targeted area nonsurgically," she says — perfect for those looking for fast beach bod results.

"Many of our clients are opting for non- surgical, minimally invasive procedures with little to no down time and, most importantly, much more subtle and natural looking results," says Pooya.

"One of our greatest compliments is that our clients frequently tell us we treat and make them feel like family," adds Pooya, who recommends visits every 12 to 16 weeks for Botox and every 12 weeks for the Silk- Peel (also called Diamond Tone Micro- dermabrasion) or microneedling services.

But in the meantime, don't forget to do upkeep with recommended must-haves available at Greenwich Medical Spa: Add Bio Serum by Neocutis to your anti- aging regime. It's "the most intensive scrum available, with an unprecedented concentration of growth factors, which are critical for aging skin and play a major role in new cell growth, collagen and elastin production and distribution."

Vitamin C plays an essential role here, too. "We love Super Serum by iS Clinical because it's not only the most advanced Vitamin C in the market, but it's also for- mulated with pharmaceutical grade botanicals, with no parabens or toxins."

Second to Coolsculpting, the fastest growing trend is the skin lifting and tightening Ultherapy procedure — think of it as a non- surgical facelift with no downtime.

"The ideal candidate is someone between the ages of 35 and 60 who has mild to moderate skin laxity and does not want or is not ready for a facelift... If you are looking to lift your skin, have more of a contoured jaw line, tighter submental [under chin] and look rejuvenated, then Ultherapy is the right treatment," explains Pooya.

For maximum results, some clients opt to follow Ultherapy with Botox and fillers, and to and maintain with Bio Serum at home.

Medical Spa Expands to Bigger Space in Greenwich

After nine years at 1345 E. Putnam Avenue, The Greenwich Medical Spa will move down the road to a brand new building in Riverside Commons.

The skin care facility will occupy two-thirds of the space at 1233 E. Putnam Ave., expanding its footprint from 1,700 to 2,500 square feet starting on or around Aug. 11.

"I've been eyeing that space since the day that I moved here nine years ago," said Marria Pooya, the medical spa's managing partner.

Verizon Wireless will take over the building's remaining third.

The medical spa's new home will have 700 square feet of retail space for skin care, makeup and novelty health and beauty items, Pooya said. The number of treatment rooms will grow from four to seven. And there will be a new acne clinic as well as a lunch room for public skin care seminars over tea and sandwiches.

"A lot of people don't know some of these treatments or what the difference is between Botox and dermal treatment," said Pooya, a 42-year-old ex-Wall Street analyst who lives with her husband and two children in Westport. "A lot of people don't know how to take care of their skin. Teens with acne oftentimes don't know how to take care of their skin using a more holistic approach. So we want to help inform people whether they're our clients or not."

Pooya said she plans to hire four new employees with help from an $80,000 grant from the state Department of Economic and Community Development. The state also awarded her a $300,000 loan to finance the build-out, she said.

"I think the new space is just going to give us such great energy," she said. "We have done really well and the new space is a great place to celebrate that and I think it will help take us to the next level."

WTNH News 8 VIDEO: Freezing Fat Cells in Problem Areas

    Published : Tuesday, 09 Jul 2013, 6:06 PM EDT
    by  Jocelyn Maminta

GREENWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- A lot of us have something we don't like about our bodies; for some, diet and exercise haven't done much to get rid of trouble spots. Now there's a new cool alternative to remove that excess flab.

Love handles and a muffin top bothered Chista Pooya. "I exercise, I watch what I eat, but sometimes it's not enough so I needed a little help," said Pooya.

So she got help at Greenwich Medical Spa. "This is for those stubborn fat areas," said Dr. Mitchell Ross, Greenwich Medical Spa.  It's CoolSculpting: a non-invasive alternative to liposuction.

"It's a permanent loss of fat cells," said Dr. Ross. The technology, developed by Harvard doctors, decreases the thickness of fat by freezing fat cells. "We put this section on the person's flanks or abdomen," said Dr. Ross. "It uses a vacuum suction and extracts energy, in other words cools the area." Dr. Ross is a board certified dermatologist.

"It cools to an exact temperature in an exact period of time so that only your fat cells are affected and those are the ones that are crystallized and frozen," Dr. Ross said.

"It felt really cold when it went on, but then it was numb for about an hour," said Pooya. "After the freezing, the fat cells undergo a natural cell death," Dr. Ross said. "They get metabolized and cleared by your body. As a result your fat layers decrease anywhere from 22 to 50 percent after one treatment."

"When they did my flanks, I did have a little bit of minor bruising for about a week to two weeks," Pooya said. "When they did my belly, it was a little numb for the first two weeks or so."

Two-and-a-half months later Pooya said, "I don't have the muffin top anymore."

She is considering fine sculpting another problem area.

Dr. Ross stresses that this is not a weight loss treatment. The cost starts at $600 and could take up to two hours for a session.
