Cryotherapy exposes the body to very low temperatures, causing a natural defensive action to kick in. You may have heard of athletes taking an ice bath to quicken recovery, and Cryotherapy utilizes the same concept. This cold thermogenesis triggers a variety of health benefits including raising metabolism, boosting endorphin release, enhancing blood flow, stimulating detoxification, reducing inflammation, and sending nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. You’ll notice an immediate rush of energy and sense of wellbeing. Inside, your body will experience a positive shift in biochemistry that produces short- and long-term benefits.

Cryotherapy offers a safe, natural solution to the body’s sluggish metabolic and healing activity. Each treatment is quick – lasting just three minutes – but the effects of increased calorie burn, endorphin release, and improved wellbeing can last for days and can become permanent with repeated sessions. This exciting new treatment is now available at Greenwich Medical Spa of Westport.

FAQs

Cryotherapy, or cold therapy, uses very cold air (about -225F) applied to the body for a short amount of time to stimulate many of the body’s healing abilities.
Initially developed to treat health problems like rheumatoid arthritis, today’s whole-body Cryotherapy treatments are known for their ability to offer many benefits. When the body encounters the very cold air during a Cryotherapy session, the natural fight-or-flight response is activated. As a result, the body releases adrenaline and endorphins to increase metabolism and energy. At the same time, blood rushes to maintain the body’s core temperature, which increases calorie burn. The body’s need to reheat following a Cryotherapy session also leads to vasoconstriction and vasodilation, which increases blood circulation and detoxification and reduces inflammation. Increased collagen production results from these responses as well.
A Cryotherapy session is cold. However, sessions last just a few minutes and relief – plus a great endorphin rush – follows immediately. Most people become more used to the treatment after they have had a few sessions. There is no downtime from a Cryotherapy session. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Cryotherapy can actually help you recover from injuries, workout soreness, and other issues faster.
During a Cryotherapy session, you will change into your bathing suit or undergarments, put on special covers for hands and feet, and step into the chamber (your head remains above the chamber). Cold, dry air will be aimed at your body for two to four minutes. As soon as your session time ends, your treatment is complete. Come back in a few days for your next session!

When the body’s fight-or-flight response kicks in due to the extremely cold temperature of Cryotherapy, even though there is no real threat, the body releases adrenaline and endorphins. These natural chemicals increase your metabolism, an effect that can last for three to five days. At the same time, the body makes an effort to maintain its core temperature, which burns 500 to 800 calories. As the body continues to reheat during the next hour or so, the increased calorie burn continues. This means that consistent Cryotherapy sessions can lead to long-term increased metabolism and ongoing raised calorie burn for continued weight loss.

In addition, Cryotherapy can help convert white fat cells, which store fat, to brown fat cells, which actually burn calories. Human brown adipose tissue has earned a lot of recent interest for its ability to increase metabolism. With Cryotherapy, this type of cell is stimulated, which also leads to more calories burned and more weight lost.

Because Cryotherapy promotes vasoconstriction and vasodilation as the body reacts to the cold temperature, healing is increased, and the production of collagen is stimulated. Increased collagen leads to firmer, smoother, and more elastic skin. While many collagen-boosting treatments are readily available for the face, whole-body Cryotherapy sessions offer a method of tightening skin on all areas of your body at one time. It’s even been shown to reduce the appearance of cellulite!

In addition to promoting weight loss and collagen production (tighter skin!), Cryotherapy can elevate mood, reduce anxiety, help with insomnia, reduce fat deposits and cellulite by deactivating cold sensitive fat cells, enhance blood flow, stimulate cell detoxification and lymphatic drainage, balance hormones, aid in surgical recovery, and increase libido and sexual stamina.
Cryotherapy sessions are quick, as you only stand in the chamber for a few minutes. Benefits last for three to five days, and with repeated sessions can become permanent. Cryotherapy is intended for use on a regular, ongoing basis to maintain your new sense of wellbeing, better metabolism, and healthier skin. Once you feel the endorphin boost, you won’t want to miss a session!
Most people can tolerate and enjoy the benefits of Cryotherapy. You should NOT use whole body Cryotherapy if you have any of the following conditions: pregnancy, hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, asthma, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, claustrophobia, cold allergy, age less than 18 years (parental consent to treatment needed) or acute kidney and urinary tract diseases.
