Fall Skincare: Time For a Chemical Peel

Fall is the perfect time to rejuvenate and refresh the skin, especially after summer exposure to the sun, heat, and environmental stressors. And what better way than with a chemical peel—one of the most effective treatments for increasing your skin’s cellular turnover. Chemical peels are highly effective for exfoliating dead skin cells, improving skin tone and texture, and addressing concerns such as pigmentation, fine lines, and clogged pores. In this article, we discuss the benefits of chemical peels during the fall, how to choose the right type of peel, and what to expect before and after treatment.

Why Fall is the Best Time for Chemical Peels

Fall is the perfect time for a chemical peel for a number of reasons. Summer leaves behind dead skin cells, sun damage, and environmental buildup that peels can address and cooler weather and reduced sun exposure make it easier for the skin to recover post-treatment. Plus, the fall is a great opportunity to prep the skin for the colder months—starting with a clean slate will ensure a brighter, more hydrated complexion.

Benefits of Chemical Peels for Skin Rejuvenation

Chemical peel treatments involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes controlled exfoliation and peeling. This process helps to remove dead skin cells, improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, and promote a smoother, more radiant complexion.

  • Exfoliation: Removes layers of dead skin cells to reveal fresher, smoother skin underneath.
  • Pigmentation and Sun Damage: Peels can target discoloration, hyperpigmentation, and sunspots caused by summer exposure.
  • Improved Skin Texture: Chemical peels help reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores, leaving the skin softer and more even.
  • Hydration: Post-peel, the skin is more receptive to moisturizers and serums, allowing for deeper hydration and a plumper look

Types of Chemical Peels

There are three levels of chemical peels—light, medium, and deep—with varying degrees of intensity, each suited for different skin types and concerns.

Light Peels

Best for minor skin concerns, dullness, and overall brightening. Light peels are a gentle choice that work well for acne and hyperpigmentation. They help slough off the top layer of skin, promoting natural exfoliation. You might feel a slight tingling during the process, but there’s usually minimal downtime. You can schedule these peels every four to six weeks, though how often you go may depend on the results you’re aiming for.

Medium Peels

Ideal for pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and deeper exfoliation. These peels go deeper than light ones and can help with issues like dark spots, fine lines, and mild acne scars. Medium peels might give you a stronger tingling feeling or some discomfort, and you might need a little recovery time afterward.

Deep Peels

Best for more significant concerns such as severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, and scars. Deep peels are the strongest option available for tackling serious acne scars and deep wrinkles. Some can be uncomfortable, often needing a local anesthetic and sedative to manage discomfort. Plus, they come with a longer recovery period compared to other types of peels.

Chemical Peel Pre-Treatment Tips

While chemical peels are one of the most effective ways to increase your skin’s cellular turnover, in order to make the most of your peel treatment, it’s important to prep.

  • Prep with the products recommended by your practitioner. Some peels require prepping with retinol and hydroquinone products to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation. It’s best to consult with your practitioner to find out what products are required for your peel prep.
  • Wear sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher daily) every day
  • Stop the use of Retinol one week before your peel
  • Stop the use of facial exfoliants, exfoliating brushes or scrubs, peel pads, AHA products, and BHA products one week before your peel
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Make sure you have reviewed the list of chemical peel contraindications of who should avoid/ not get a chemical peel
  • On the day of your peel, keep it simple. Don’t wear any makeup to your appointment. After cleansing that morning, apply moisturizer and SPF.

Post-Treatment Timing

A common recovery timeline may look like:

  • First few hours: You’ll notice some redness, tingling, or sensitivity
  • First few days: You may notice some dryness, irritation, and mild swelling
  • 2-3 days: Your skin may look flaky or peel, and discolorations or imperfections may temporarily be more noticeable
  • 3-4 days: You may breakout or notice skin looks tan or slightly darker than usual
  • 5-7 days: All side effects should start to subside, and your skin should begin to look and feel “normal”
  • 7-14 days: You’ll see the formation of healthy, new skin, but you may notice some redness or skin that is darker or lighter than usual for up to a month

Chemical Peel Post-Treatment Tips

Rinse your face with cool water

Warm or hot water may not provide the same soothing effect that cool or cold water does after a peel.

Moisturize and hydrate your skin

Peels can weaken its protective barrier. Use a medium-to-thick moisturizer and increase your water intake to prevent dehydration, which can cause tightness in your skin.

Apply sunscreen

Don’t forgo sunscreen as your skin is more sensitive post-peel. To protect against sun damage and visible aging, avoid direct sunlight and opt for a Broad Spectrum physical sunscreen with an spf of 30 or higher.

Refrain from engaging in intense workouts

Avoid intense exercise, dry saunas, and steam rooms as these can heighten sensations like warmth, tingling, or redness on freshly peeled skin. It’s best to avoid these activities on the day of your peel.

Avoid over-exfoliating

Peels are already strong exfoliants. Steer clear of additional exfoliants for 3-4 days after your peel to prevent increased redness or sensitivity. Wait until your skin feels ready before resuming exfoliation.

Keep it simple

It’s important to avoid certain products in your regular skincare routine, as they might contain active ingredients that could irritate your skin. During the peeling phase, the only products you should use are sunscreen and a gentle, neutral moisturizer to keep your skin comfortable. It’s normal for your skin to feel and appear dry during this time, and a moisturizer won’t be able to fully alleviate that dryness. Once your skin returns to its normal state after a peel, you can typically go back to your regular skincare routine.

Resist the Retinol

Retinols are great skincare products for encouraging new cell growth and turnover, but your skin is already working on this once it’s had a chemical peel. Don’t send your skin into cell turnover overload—wait until it has healed before resuming your retinols. It’s also recommended that you stop using your retinol products a week before your peel.
